Actively leveraging global standards has enabled British University Vietnam to strengthen institutional credibility, accelerate student growth, and position itself as a leading university in Asia, QS noted.
QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) – one of the world’s most reputable university ranking and evaluation organisations – has recently selected British University Vietnam (BUV) as a standout case study, highlighting the University’s breakthrough progress through the strategic adoption of rigorous quality assurance frameworks.
According to QS, BUV’s integrated approach spanning local accreditation, national accreditation, and global benchmarking has enabled the University to turn constraints into powerful competitive advantages and achieve quality milestones described as “previously unseen” in Vietnam’s higher education sector.

A wave of scepticism
QS places BUV’s story within the wider context of transnational education, where new entrants face a familiar structural challenge: proving quality before outcomes exist.
When BUV was founded in 2009, QS describes Vietnam’s education market as deeply challenging, with per-capita income at around US$1,000 a year – roughly one-twelfth of BUV’s annual tuition fees at the time – while long-established public universities remained a perceived “safe choice” for many parents.
BUV therefore had to solve two problems in parallel: building trust in a new British-style model of higher education, while establishing legitimacy and demonstrable quality in a market where scepticism towards private international institutions was still widespread.
Against this backdrop, QS argues that BUV executed a confident reversal: turning headwinds into a “gold-standard test”. Instead of avoiding stringent standards, BUV embraced them as a strategic lever, using reputable accreditation and benchmarking systems as the foundation for credibility and quality assurance.
“We stand on the shoulders of quality assurance bodies, accreditation agencies, and ranking organisations that have created our infrastructure for global education excellence,” said Professor Rick Bennett, BUV Deputy Vice Chancellor and Vice President, at the 2025 QS Higher Education Summit: Asia Pacific. “It represents a long-term commitment to our students and parents: every BUV degree holds global value and is validated against the world’s most rigorous standards.”

From a domestic “passport” to a global “visa”
BUV engineered what QS describes as a three-tiered quality assurance system, a model known internally as the Triple Quality Framework – triple-tier quality assurance framework spanning local accreditation, national benchmarking, and global benchmarking. QS notes that this framework allowed BUV to measure excellence through both qualitative and quantitative indicators.
At the local level, BUV aligns with Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) through six compulsory national standards and 20 quantitative quality indicators across governance, teaching, facilities, finance, admissions, and research. In September 2025, MOET’s Quality Management Department announced a list of 17 universities accredited by prestigious international quality assurance organisations, among which BUV was the only foreign-invested university recognised, serving as a clear “passport” that reinforced its domestic legitimacy.

At the national accreditation level, QS highlights BUV as the first university in Vietnam and the ASEAN region to secure accreditation from the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) – a widely recognised “gold standard” applied to prestigious institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge. QS notes that this tier required full compliance with all 10 European Standards and Guidelines (ESG) criteria, alongside formal recognition of QAA in Vietnam, thereby creating a strong bridge between the two quality assurance systems and deepening trust among partners and families seeking authentic British higher education.
This synergy has become a powerful lever, enabling BUV to transform from a “newcomer” into a strategic partner of 76 universities across 17 countries, including many prestigious Russell Group institutions such as the University of Bristol and the University of Liverpool.
At the global level, BUV is the first university in Vietnam to maintain the QS 5-Star rating for six consecutive years (2022–2028), demonstrating a truly international learning environment with 81% international faculty from 31 countries, alongside student exchange partnerships across 14 leading global education markets.
With 100% of its faculty internationally qualified, BUV provides a global learning environment right in Vietnam.
Mr. Samuel Ang, Regional Director of Asia at QS, remarked: “BUV’s consistent achievement of the QS 5-Star rating reflects its unwavering commitment to excellence and continuous improvement across all areas of higher education. Within the region, BUV stands out as a benchmark institution, showcasing how a university in Viet Nam can deliver world-class outcomes, reinforce national and regional competitiveness in global higher education.”
Notably, BUV is among the first universities in Vietnam to be featured in QS’s ranking of the world’s leading MBA programmes, achieving a Top 43 position in Asia. BUV degrees are officially recognised by China’s Ministry of Education, empowering graduates to build careers in one of the world’s most dynamic markets and affirming the value of a truly global “passport.”
According to QS, BUV has seen multi-faceted improvements as a result of their accreditations. BUV’s student population has reached over 2,500, with rapid annual growth. The University is continuously included in MOET’s top-tier institution rankings and has enhanced trust and brand recognition among parents and students.
Three students from BUV’s International Foundation Program have achieved rankings in the top global tier, demonstrating BUV’s outstanding academic quality.
A “lever” for Viet Nam’s national education ambition
In its vision to 2030, Viet Nam has set an ambition to place at least two higher education institutions in the global Top 100 and ten institutions in the global Top 500, while progressing towards becoming an international education hub for the region. QS notes that BUV’s development trajectory is contributing directly to this agenda.
First, BUV helps raise global visibility of Vietnam’s higher-education sector by repositioning the country’s image-shifting from being primarily a “sender” of outbound students to becoming a high-quality study destination.
Second, QS assesses that BUV has established a scalable quality assurance model, demonstrating how international standards can serve as a tool to elevate internal quality and enhance Viet Nam’s higher education standing. QS underscores that quality assurance is not a constraint, but a catalyst for growth, reputation, and global ambition.
Finally, QS highlights that BUV’s presence contributes to a future “knowledge and innovation hub,” rather than only a financial hub.
According to QS, BUV has mapped out a long-term trajectory with clearly defined milestones aligned with global ranking benchmarks: entering the Top 100 universities in Asia by 2030 and reaching the Top 100 universities worldwide by 2050.
QS notes that BUV is contributing to enhancing the global standing of Vietnamese higher education.
QS concludes that the university’s Triple Quality Framework and long-term alignment with national and international standards position it as a future top 100 Asian university and a potential global research leader by 2050, supporting Viet Nam’s step-by-step progress towards parity with leading education nations in the region and beyond.
