Alumna Le Thanh Mai: Understanding comes from connection 15:50:01

As a former student of the International Business Management class of 2014, Ms. Le Thanh Mai has embarked on a journey that has seen her evolve from a emotionally rich individual to a distinctive leader who leads from the heart. Let’s delve into Ms. Le Thanh Mai’s story and uncover her unique approach to community engagement and leadership.

Ms. Le Thanh Mai, a proud alumna of BUV

Question: Reflecting on your time at BUV a decade ago, what are some standout memories from your uni days?

Studying at BUV was an exhilarating and unforgettable experience. Looking back at old photographs from ten years ago fills me with nostalgia. During my time at BUV, I was fortunate to receive unwavering support, encouragement, and a sense of camaraderie from my esteemed lecturers such as Chris, Vic, Roy, Tony, Prabu, Jonathan, James, Simon, Mike… Their guidance ignited my curiosity to explore the diverse world around me.

Question: How has your education at BUV shaped your leadership skills and sense of social responsibility?

BUV provided me with numerous opportunities to engage in volunteer work and take up leadership roles in student organisations. These formative experiences instilled in me a sense of duty to contribute positively to the community. I gained invaluable insights into diversity, various leadership styles, and the importance of respecting individual identities—skills that have been instrumental in my current role in Marketing & Communications and in life. The collaborative projects, experiential learning, and personal development initiatives at BUV equipped me with practical skills such as communication, networking, teamwork, and leadership, making me adept at navigating multicultural work environments.

In my professional journey, I gravitate towards organisations that prioritize community engagement and social responsibility, such as Eurocham, Bosch, Ernst & Young, Prime Group, and USAID. As a team leader, I prioritize creating an inclusive environment where each member feels empowered to leverage their strengths and foster personal growth—a philosophy I imbibed from BUV’s tutorial model.

Mai tends to choose community-driven companies such as Eurocham, Bosch, Ernst & Young, Prime Group, and USAID

For the most part, BUV lecturers and staff have always been friendly and willing to help when students need it. Having the opportunity to grow in such a positive environment, where my aspirations and dreams are heard and supported, has helped me cultivate a sense of gratitude and a willingness to give back. When reconnecting and conversing with fellow BUV alumni, I noticed that many of them also possess positive energy, open-mindedness, excellent leadership skills, and a desire to contribute to the community.

Question: As a seasoned professional in Communications, what advice would you offer to International Business Management students aspiring to pursue a similar career path?

Pursuing the International Business Management programme equips you with a holistic understanding of business, including the pivotal role of marketing and communication. To excel in this field, continuous self-study and skill enhancement are imperative. For those interested in Digital Marketing, delve into theoretical concepts and seek internships to gain practical experience. Similarly, aspiring Public Relations professionals should focus on honing writing skills and building media relationships through internships and hands-on practice. Brand Management enthusiasts should develop expertise in market research, event organization, and strategic planning.

Staying abreast of market trends, honing technical skills, and fostering soft skills such as communication and problem-solving are essential for success in marketing and communications. Remember, learning is a lifelong journey, and I wish the next generation of BUV students success in their endeavours!
