British University Vietnam maintains pioneering position in promoting sustainable development 16:32:23

“As leaders in disseminating knowledge, universities can inspire other organisations and communities to learn and follow their example, creating a powerful ripple effect, especially in sustainable development,” emphasised a representative from British University Vietnam (BUV).

In a rapidly evolving world, the need for sustainable practices is more pressing than ever. Vietnam, like many other nations, recognises the significance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles in securing a resilient future.

In an effort to establish a platform for connecting big ideas from influential figures and organisations, the Vietnam ESG Investor Conference 2024 was held by Raise Partners and Vietnam Innovators by Vietcetera in mid-May.

With the theme “Building a Resilient Future for Vietnam”, this year’s conference attracted participation from diverse sectors, including government leaders, business executives, experts, and research and non-governmental organizations from both within and outside the country. The discussions aimed to promote environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) projects, thereby building a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous future for Vietnam.

Commitment to building a “green” university

In the session titled “Building a green university,” Ms. Thuy Nguyen, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Operations) at BUV, delivered a speech on the green infrastructure strategy at BUV. In her speech, Ms. Nguyen emphasised BUV’s pioneering position in investment, governance, and education for green development in Vietnam, while also demonstrating a long-term commitment to sustainable development.

Ms. Thuy highlighted BUV’s Green Strategy, which has been meticulously planned and consistently applied throughout the investment in major educational projects in Vietnam. The university has made significant strides toward sustainability by integrating green principles into its infrastructure, new expansions, educational foundation, curriculum, and extracurricular activities for students.

Staying true to its Green vision and the sustainable development strategies outlined for the future, BUV aims to solidify its position as the leading green university in the region, becoming a positive catalyst for social transformation.

Ms. Thuy Nguyen underscored the pivotal role of educational institutions in driving societal change. “Education institutions serve as powerful catalysts for change, shaping the values, attitudes, and behaviours of future leaders and citizens,” shared Ms. Thuy Nguyen, “As leaders in knowledge dissemination and societal transformation, universities can inspire other institutions and communities to follow suit, creating a ripple effect of positive change.”

Sharing this perspective, Mr. Tim Evans, CEO at HSBC Vietnam, emphasised that the energy transition roadmap and effective investment models require collaborative efforts between the public and private sectors. He stated that achieving net-zero emissions can only be realised through cooperative endeavours that leverage the strengths and resources of both sides.

Essential skills for the future workforce

Chairing the discussion session “Investing in Education to Build an Inclusive Digital & Green Workforce by 2050,” Professor Rick Bennett, Vice-President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor at BUV, introduced a series of new approaches to equipping the young generation to navigate the challenges of the digital age while prioritising environmental sustainability.

Under the guidance of Professor Bennett, the speakers discussed the increasing prominence of green industries in Vietnam thanks to the country’s commitment to NetZero. They explored new approaches to shaping the future workforce, especially given the high demand for a digital, green, and inclusive economy by 2050.

According to Mr. Craig Martin, Chairman of Dynam Capital, investing in human capital is key for Vietnam to strengthen its position in the global supply chain, enhance competitiveness in the international market, and ensure sustainable growth amid numerous challenges.

“Vietnam is already an attractive destination for investments by global companies looking to diversify their supply chains. But there is a long road ahead to elevate our position as a real manufacturing powerhouse and drive broader participation in higher value global supply chains. We need to invest in modernizing and greening industrial zones, smart ESG facilities management, and increasing quality of research and development and workforce capacity,” elaborated Mr. Craig Martin.

“By creating an inclusive culture and adapting our practices to support all employees, we enhance our overall work environment and attract top talent,” says Professor Rick Bennett, “Our journey towards sustainability continues, and we hope our achievements inspire others to join us in creating a greener future.”

In a bid to promote gender equality, Ms. Anjanette Saguisag, Chief of Social Policy and Governance at UNICEF Vietnam, proposed initiatives to support women and children in the textile industries, including healthcare, education, and social welfare. When effectively integrated into business models and workplace culture, these initiatives will harness the potential of women not only in the workforce but also in society at large, aligning with Vietnam’s sustainable development goals and ensuring a fairer and more resilient future for all.

As the 2024 Vietnam ESG Investor Conference draws to a close, BUV and the speakers have successfully unveiled new potentials for sustainable development in the field of high-quality human resource training in Vietnam. BUV also reinforced the pivotal role of higher education institutions in driving social development.
