What Defines the New Generation of Leaders? 11:51:45

In business, theory often sits quietly like a map: structured, precise, and predictable. But the market is more like an open ocean, constantly shifting with unseen currents. It is in navigating this space between certainty and chaos that true leadership is forged.

Innovation Rooted in Identity

Vietnam’s national strategy for science, technology, and innovation development toward 2030 identifies innovation as a key driver of growth. As a result, many leaders feel increasing pressure to innovate at all costs. But this raises an important question: Does innovation necessarily mean groundbreaking inventions that change the world, or an intense race fueled by financial investment?

At the MBA programme at BUV, the conversation around innovation does not begin with abstract concepts. Instead, it starts with deeper reflections on identity and sustainability. Through insights shared by startup founders, those who are directly navigating market challenges to shape their own identity, students gain a grounded, real-world perspective on modern entrepreneurship.

The thought-provoking perspective of Nguyễn Thu Hoài, Founder and CEO of Nương Bắc (Vietnam’s first premium bánh chưng gifting brand), on “modernising heritage” introduces a compelling management question: How can tradition be commercialised without losing its soul? By reinterpreting traditional cuisine through a contemporary lens and elevating it into a refined cultural gifting experience, Hoài demonstrates how innovation can both preserve and amplify national values.

This shift in mindset is further reinforced by the philosophy of “Small, Beautiful, and Sustainable” by Dr. Hoàng Thị Thu Phương, Founder and CEO of Kafela Coffee. In an industrial coffee market often characterised by blending and compromise, Kafela’s commitment to preserving original flavours sends a powerful message: innovation can sometimes mean rejecting rapid growth to protect product integrity, a core value that should never be compromised.

Complementing these perspectives, Nguyễn Thùy Dương, Founder and CEO of TASK Education Academy, highlights the intersection of personal passion, core capabilities, and societal needs. Through its learner-centered education model, TASK is dedicated to nurturing individuals who are self-aware, responsible, and capable of embracing cultural heritage while addressing global challenges. In this context, the MBA classroom becomes a space for students to rediscover the true purpose of business: solving societal problems through viable models grounded in integrity and critical thinking.

Reflecting on this experience, MBA student Vân Anh, currently Executive Assistant at Ecopark Nomura Real Estate JSC, shared: “What I find most valuable about learning from guest speakers is the authenticity and immediacy of their insights. They do not just present polished outcomes; they walk us through their thinking processes, including doubts, mistakes, and lessons learned. This level of transparency helps bridge the gap between academic knowledge and professional practice.”

Leadership in Diversity

If innovation defines a company’s identity, then the ability to navigate multicultural contexts is what enables leaders to operate on a global stage. In the module Cross Cultural Management & Leadership, MBA students explore this essential capability through hands-on learning with Professor Rick Bennett, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at BUV. With extensive leadership experience across leading universities in Vietnam and internationally, he brings valuable insights into balancing global knowledge with local context.

In today’s world, an effective leader not only needs a global mindset to meet international standards but, more importantly, must demonstrate cultural sensitivity, empathy, and adaptability to different local contexts.

Through simulated cross-cultural communication scenarios, students apply Cultural Intelligence and Emotional Intelligence to better observe and understand the nuances behind behaviours. This is the hallmark of next-generation leaders, those who can turn cultural diversity into a driver of innovation, making decisions that are both globally strategic and locally relevant.

Turning Knowledge into Real-World Capability

Practical insights from business leaders and experienced professionals have helped shape a dynamic learning ecosystem at BUV. Through a problem-based learning approach, theory is no longer confined to textbooks but continuously tested against real-world business challenges. This enables students to sharpen their analytical thinking and respond effectively to market changes.

Beyond the classroom, the MBA journey at BUV also offers valuable opportunities to build and expand professional networks. Direct engagement with guest speakers, industry experts, and fellow students, many of whom are experienced managers, fosters strategic thinking and opens doors for future collaboration.

Ultimately, this journey is not just about earning an internationally recognised master’s degree. It is about nurturing leaders who think differently, act responsibly, and possess the confidence and capability to step onto the global stage.
