POSITION PURPOSE

To support the development and delivery of learning and teaching materials across the School of Communications and Creative Industries. This developing school currently includes Professional Communications (Business, Design and Strategy) and Contemporary Creative Practice.

The Teaching Assistant helps Teaching Faculty ensure the efficient delivery of the programmes in accordance with the University’s strategy, policy and procedures; contribute to activities which prioritise student-centred learning; and will also undertake projects, development tasks and/or other research and engagement activities in line the goals of the specialist department or mission of BUV academic faculty.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Student learning experience

  1. Assist implementation of appropriate learning and support strategies to ensure student engagement and achievement.
  2. Assist teaching staff to supervise and deliver student projects and academic content
  3. Support teaching staff to identify areas where current provision requires revision or improvement and provide support in the planning, design and development of new content and teaching materials.
  4. Act as basic learning mentor to students; advising on time-management, good study practice and areas of personal and/or specialised project development.

Managing people and resources

  1. As a teaching assistant, co-ordinate with the Discipline Lead/Programme Lead and teaching faculty to help ensure the learning needs and expectations of students at all levels of the specialist programme are met.
  2. Manage projects relating to own area of work and the efficient distribution of materials related to modules and teaching delivery.
  3. Provide support and co-ordination to students and ensure they achieve and are meeting the study standards required.
  4. Help co-ordinate and prepare teaching spaces and resources; physical and digital as appropriate.

Pastoral care

  1. Use listening, interpersonal and pastoral care skills to deal with sensitive issues concerning students and provide support.
  2. Identify at risk students and refer to teaching staff as appropriate for further support.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

COMPETENCIES (knowledge, skills, and abilities)

(Essential)

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline area. (from recognized institution) is essential.
  • Sufficient specialist knowledge in the Communications and Creative Industries to offer provision of learning support.
  • Knowledge of higher education teaching methods and an ability connect, enthuse and engage students.
  • Experience of a specialised programme area and willingness to develop personal skills and new knowledge within this field.
  • Evidence of a positive contribution or engagement within the specialised discipline or programme area and willingness to share this experience with students
  • Understand equal opportunity issues as they may impact on academic content and issues relating to student need.
  • Excellent written and verbal Communications skills.
  • Able to communicate concepts to a range of groups.
  • Able to demonstrate independent and self-managing working styles.

(Desireable)

  • Teaching qualification or preparedness to work towards such.

COMPETENCIES (behavioural)

Communications

  • Be able to clearly communicate complex ideas to students with limited knowledge as well as to peers using high level skills and a range of media.

Teamwork

  • Act as a responsible team member to develop productive working relationships with other members of staff.
  • Co-ordinate the work of teaching team to identify and respond to student’s needs.

Initiative, problem-solving and decision making

  • Assist teaching faculty in identifying potential improvements aspects in programme delivery.
  • Support the teaching faculty in the design and delivery of modules and assessment methods considering established University practice and the specialist needs of students where necessary.
  • Collaborate with the teaching faculty to ensure the efficient implementation and revision of assessment procedures to ensure good student outcomes and achievement.
  • Within the limits of their responsibilities to document and report issues affecting the quality of student engagement and teaching delivery, referring any urgent matters to the teaching faculty, Programme and/or Discipline Lead as appropriate.

Work Environment

  • Be aware of the workplace risks and their potential impact on their own work and that of others.
  • Depending on area of work (for example laboratories, workshops, studios) conduct risk assessments, take steps to reduce hazards and take responsibility for the health and safety of self and others.
  • Identify issues or concerns related to the learning environment and resources, referring more serious matters to the teaching faculty, Programme and/or Discipline Lead as appropriate.
