Students from De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde (CSB), one of the Philippines’ most distinguished creative and applied learning institutions, recently completed an eight-day Culture Immersion Programme at British University Vietnam (BUV).
From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the tranquil waterways of Ninh Binh, students experienced Vietnam across its many layers. City landmarks, including the Museum of Ethnology, Temple of Literature, Hoa Lo Prison, and Hoan Kiem Lake, offered windows into the country’s history, identity, and resilience. A hands-on pottery session at Bat Trang Village introduced the centuries-old craft tradition behind one of Vietnam’s most beloved art forms, while a Vietnamese Cooking Class brought students face-to-face with the country’s culinary heritage. The day trip to the UNESCO-recognised Trang An complex and ancient capital Hoa Lu completed the picture: a Vietnam that is as historically rich as it is naturally breathtaking.

Alongside cultural exploration, academic sessions at BUV were designed to connect global concepts with Vietnamese realities. Students tried their hand at the local language in a Survival Vietnamese workshop and explored the coffee industry as a lens for entrepreneurship thinking. A Panel Talk on “Empowering Sustainable Impact Through Higher Education” sparked meaningful dialogue on how universities can drive responsible change, a theme that would carry through to the rest of the programme. A Creative Art Making workshop, facilitated by BUV students themselves, closed out the academic sessions with a spirit of peer-to-peer exchange and creative collaboration.
Beyond the campus, a visit to Appota, a pioneering company in providing technology solutions and digital entertainment content in Vietnam, gave CSB students direct exposure to the country’s fast-growing tech landscape. Through a sharing session with Appota’s team, students gained firsthand perspectives on how Vietnamese businesses innovate and scale in a competitive regional market, bridging classroom learning with real-world application in a way that no lecture alone could replicate.
The centrepiece of the programme was the Case Study Challenge, in which student teams were tasked with designing a comprehensive and interactive strategy to bridge the sustainability knowledge gap and enhance campus engagement. Drawing on their own academic backgrounds and the fresh perspectives gained throughout the week, teams developed and presented proposals ranging from peer-led advocacy initiatives to gamified awareness campaigns. The session was facilitated in two phases: group work followed by a formal presentation and awarding ceremony, pushing students to think rigorously, communicate clearly, and translate ideas into something tangible.
With its vision to become the number one international university in Vietnam and the surrounding region, BUV continues to expand opportunities for cross-cultural engagement. Through the Culture Immersion Programme, BUV connects young international talents with Vietnam’s dynamic growth and diverse culture, building not just academic exchange, but the kind of global perspective that only lived experience can provide.
