On December 16, 2024, at the United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Saudi Arabia, Associate Professor Dr. Mike Perkins represented the British University Vietnam (BUV) in a pivotal session on the future of AI and education. His presentation tackled the growing challenges of AI text detection technologies and introduced the AI Assessment Scale—a new framework designed to promote AI equity, particularly in the Global South.
The IGF is a key global platform where policymakers, researchers, and digital stakeholders come together to shape the future of internet governance. Through annual meetings and intersessional work, the forum facilitates policy dialogue and the exchange of best practices to address critical digital issues.
In his remarks, Dr. Mike Perkins emphasized the limitations of current AI detection tools, particularly their impact on vulnerable student groups: “Current AI detection methods are failing us – they often miss genuine AI-generated work while falsely flagging human output, and it is the ESL and neurodivergent students who suffer the most. Instead of investing in increasingly complex detection, we need to reframe our approach by designing better assessments. That realisation led us to develop the AI Assessment Scale, a framework that empowers educators to adapt to these changes rather than fight against them.”
Dr. Perkins’ contribution sparked meaningful dialogue among international delegates and reinforced BUV’s commitment to shaping responsible and inclusive approaches to AI in education. The AI Assessment Scale is currently being piloted and refined, with the potential to serve as a practical and equitable alternative to AI detection technologies worldwide.
