JOB PURPOSE
The Online Learning Designer is responsible for building high-quality, student-centred online courses at scale at BUV. The role converts approved curriculum and academic content into structured, engaging, and accessible courses that support learning outcomes. This is a delivery-focused role with accountability for consistency, clarity, and adherence to deadlines.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Online course build and production
- Build complete online courses in the LMS from approved module/programme documents and academic materials.
- Apply layout and module templates to ensure consistent learner experience across courses.
- Design learning interactions (H5P, SCORM, javascript/html) appropriate to level and discipline.
- Storyboard and collaborate with media production team on video design and specifications.
- Clarify content gaps and identify build issues; escalate academic decisions to academic owners / manager.
- Prepare courses for launch: settings, links, scheduling, publishing, student orientation items, and course housekeeping.
- Student-centred learning design
- Create online learning experiences with clear sequencing and progression, manageable workload, and strong signposting.
- Design interactions that address learning outcomes while minimising complexity and cognitive load.
- Ensure content is clear for learners with English as a second language.
- Apply accessibility and inclusive design practices (page structure, headings, alt text, captions/transcripts, readable formatting).
- Assessment build, integrity, and alignment
- Ensure constructive alignment: learning outcomes → learning activities → assessments.
- Build assessments with clear instructions, rubrics, marking guidance, submission settings, and moderation-ready structures.
- Ensure courses are “evidence-ready” to support assurance of learning and continuous improvement reviews.
- Stakeholder collaboration
- Collaborate with faculty, LMS, and media production teams throughout production.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS
Internal: Manager Online, Programme Leads, Module Leaders, AQO/QA, Media Production, IT, Student Support teams.
External (as required): tool providers, external partners.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Minimum Academic/Professional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Languages, Media/Communication, or related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
- High proficiency in English suitable for producing student-facing content (recommended: IELTS Band 7 or equivalent).
- Proven experience building complete courses in an LMS (Canvas preferred).
- Experience with e-learning tools (e.g., H5P, Articulate, SCORM) and basic media workflows.
Related Experience (Desirable)
- Experience supporting large-scale online course rollouts using templates/standards.
- Experience producing English language courses, IELTS, EAP.
- Higher education experience and familiarity with academic expectations
- Demonstrated application of pedagogical best practices in learning design.
COMPETENCIES (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
- Strong skills in design software – Adbobe suite preferred.
- Excellent written communication: clear instructions, consistent formatting, learner-friendly language.
- Effective verbal communication and ability to coordinate with stakeholders.
- Overall technical confidence: troubleshooting settings/links; WYSIWYG editing; HTML is an advantage.
- Knowledge of pedagogy, andragogy, instructional design principles
