POSITION PURPOSE

The Learning Advisor is a specialist academic support role within the Student Academic Support (SAS) team, responsible for enhancing student academic success, supporting at-risk student recovery, and contributing to institution-wide student success initiatives.

This role provides one-to-one academic consultancy and learning support for students across the university, helping them design personalised study plans, strengthen study skills, improve academic performance, and develop effective independent learning strategies aligned with their academic goals.

In addition, the Learning Advisor plays a key role in developing and coordinating BUV’s at-risk and academic recovery processes. The position is responsible for supporting at-risk students through structured recovery interventions, monitoring student engagement and progression, analysing at-risk trends and student behaviours, and contributing institutional insights to improve learning, teaching, and student success strategies across the university.

The role also leads the development and delivery of study skills workshops, learning development initiatives, and academic support resources that promote independent learning and long-term academic success.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

1. Student Learning Advisory & Academic Consultancy

  • Provide one-to-on academic consultations to students across all programmes and levels.
  • Support students in designing personalised academic recovery plans and study plans aligned with their learning goals and academic requirements.
  • Guide students in developing effective study strategies, time management, academic planning, independent learning, and self-regulated learning skills.
  • Provide ailored support for students experiencing academic difficulties, low engagement, or transition challenges.

2. At-Risk Student Recovery & Intervention

  • Lead and coordinate academic recovery support for at-risk students referred by faculties, ASSA, or other university departments.
  • Conduct recovery consultations and implement structured intervention plans for students requiring additional academic support.
  • Monitor student engagement, progression, and recovery outcomes throughout the intervention process.
  • Maintain accurate records and tracking systems related to at-risk student support and engagement.
  • Collaborate with faculties and support departments to coordinate holistic student interventions and follow-up actions.
  • Contribute to the development and enhancement of BUV’s at-risk student recovery framework and processes.

3. Student Data Tracking & Institutional Analysis

  • Analyse at-risk student data, engagement trends, progression patterns, and recurring academic challenges.
  • Produce reports and insights to support evidence-based decision-making related to student success and retention initiatives.
  • Identify common behavioural and academic risk indicators affecting student performance and progression.
  • Contribute recommendations to improve learning support strategies, student engagement approaches, and teaching practices across the university.
  • Support the development of future early-detection and early-alert systems for academically vulnerable students.

4. Study Skills Development & Learning Support Initiatives

  • Design and deliver study skills workshops, academic success sessions, and learning development programmes for students.
  • Develop online and in-person study skills resources, guides, and learning materials.
  • Collaborate with faculties and departments to identify common student learning needs and academic skill gaps.
  • Support SAS-led initiatives including assessment recaps, orientation sessions, PSG Weeks, and academic support campaigns.
  • Promote awareness and engagement with SAS academic support services across the university.

5. Cross-Department Collaboration & Student Success Initiatives

  • Work closely with faculties, ASSA, PSG, Student Services, and other stakeholders to support student success initiatives.
  • Participate in university projects and committees related to academic support, student retention, and learning enhancement.
  • Contribute to the strategic development of SAS services and long-term student success initiatives.
  • Support the future expansion of Learning Advisory as an official university-wide academic support service available to all BUV students.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS

COMPETENCIES (knowledge, skills, and abilities)

Essential

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education, Learning & Teaching, Educational Psychology, Student Affairs, Academic Development, or a related field.
  • Experience working in academic support, student success, learning development, or higher education support services.
  • Experience supporting students with academic difficulties, low engagement, or at-risk recovery interventions.
  • Song understanding of study skills development, learning strategies, and independent learning practices.
  • Excellent communication, consultation, and interpersonal skills in English.
  • Strong organisational, analytical, and student support skills.
  • Ability to analyse student engagement and progression data to identify trends and recommend interventions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with diverse student populations.

Desirable

  • Experience conducting research or projects related to at-risk students, student retention, academic recovery, or student success.
  • Specialised training, certification, or postgraduate study related to academic recovery, learning support, educational psychology, or student wellbeing.
  • Experience developing study skills workshops, learning resources, or academic success programmes.
  • Familiarity with student engagement systems, learning analytics, or early-alert frameworks in higher education.
  • Familiarity with international higher education environments and student support systems.
