BUV Alumna’s Research Sheds Light on the Impact of Clean Water and Sanitation on Child Mortality in South Asia

On the path to pursue sustainable development through academia, Ly Minh Anh, an alumna from BUV’s Tourism Management programme, published “Revisiting the Impact of Clean Water and Improved Sanitation on Child Mortality: Implications for Sustainable Development Goals” in 2022.
In the South Asian region, where countries such as Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and the Maldives grapple with low-to-middle per capita incomes, the scarcity of safe drinking water and improved sanitation is reaching alarming levels, ranging from 40% to over 70%. According to UNICEF, unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is still responsible for the deaths of around 400,000 children under the age of 5 each year, or 1,000 every day.
This critical issue has spurred the initiative of Ly Minh Anh, a proud graduate of BUV’s Tourism Management programme, who has dedicated her research to understanding the profound impact of clean water and improved sanitation on child mortality rates.
Minh Anh’s research is a testament to her commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting the crucial role that access to clean water and enhanced sanitation plays in ensuring the well-being of children. Her findings not only underscore the severity of the situation but also propose innovative initiatives aimed at raising societal awareness about this pressing issue.

Minh Anh was inspired by the educational journey at BUV to pursue an academic journey. Currently pursuing her PhD in Sociology at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA, Minh Anh remains dedicated to academic pursuits that contribute to broader social development goals. She was also the lead author in several published papers in her field of expertise, playing an active role in advancing academic findings to aid sustainable development in developing areas.
