In a recent online seminar, BUV Centre for Research and Innovation joined forces with the British Chamber of Commerce to host a lively discussion on the sustainable and ethical use of AI in education.

The webinar garnered more than 200 viewers and generated a thoughtful conversation, joined by Dr. Mike Perkins, Head of the Centre for Research & Innovation at BUV; Dr. Doug Grove, Head of School at Concordia International School Hanoi; and Mr. Daniel Ruelle, Director of the Teaching and Learning Excellence Center at VinUniversity.

Fostering critical thinking in understanding and using AI

In the webinar, the experts raised and discussed several key points regarding the responsible and ethical use of AI in education. The webinar underscored the imperative to view AI as an integral part of the educational experience rather than stigmatizing it as a shortcut or “cheating.” Emphasising its potential to enhance educational outcomes, the discussion positioned AI tools as vital instruments in preparing students for a future driven by technology.

While embracing AI, the discussion emphasized the crucial role of maintaining and promoting critical thinking skills among students. AI should not merely serve as a shortcut; instead, students should leverage it to augment their analytical and problem-solving abilities. Encouraging students to question and evaluate AI-generated information fosters a balanced approach to technology in education.

Improving educator proficiency in AI understanding

To effectively guide students in utilising AI, educators must possess a comprehensive understanding of AI technologies. The webinar stressed the importance of equipping teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills to incorporate AI into their teaching methods. This proficiency enables educators to mentor students in responsible and effective AI usage.

The seminar highlighted the pivotal role of educators in teaching students how to use AI responsibly. This involves imparting knowledge not only on how to harness the power of AI but also on recognizing and mitigating potential pitfalls, such as the dissemination of false information. Educators play a crucial role in preparing students to be discerning consumers of AI-generated content.

Addressing challenges of AI-generated false information

An essential aspect discussed was the potential for AI to produce false information. Understanding the limitations and challenges associated with AI helps educators guide students in critically evaluating the information they encounter. This awareness is vital for cultivating a media-literate generation capable of navigating the complexities of AI-generated content.

In conclusion, the seminar highlighted the transformative potential of integrating AI into education while acknowledging the importance of maintaining a balance that promotes critical thinking and responsible usage. Educators emerged as key players in this paradigm shift, requiring a deep understanding of AI to effectively guide students in leveraging its benefits while navigating its challenges.

BUV stands proud as one of the pioneers in paving the way for integrating AI into higher education effectively. Numerous research papers and applications have come out of the dedication to utilising AI to its full potential. The collaborative effort with other institutions like this webinar signals BUV’s dedication to embracing the future of an ethically grounded educational landscape in Vietnam.
