Established in 2009, BUV delivers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes following UK academic standards.

Students study at a world class campus in Ecopark, developed with an investment of up to USD 165 million, offering modern facilities and an international-standard learning environment for more than 10,000 students upon completion.

POSITION PURPOSE

The Tutor is an early-career academic support role responsible for the independent delivery of tutorial classes, seminars, and workshops. Tutors work under the academic direction of a Module Leader, whose responsibility is to design the module, deliver lectures, and set the framework within which tutorials operate.

Tutors take responsibility for the day-to-day delivery of tutorial-level teaching, first-mark student assessments (subject to moderation by the Module Leader), and contribute to the preparation of tutorial materials and supporting learning resources. They are expected to bring subject expertise, sound pedagogic judgement, and a professional, student-centred approach to the classroom.

This role is a non-promotion-track academic support position and does not auto-progress to higher academic ranks. Enrolment in a doctoral programme does not automatically trigger progression to Associate Lecturer (Level A); progression to any academic rank requires a separate recruitment application.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Independent Tutorial Delivery

  • Independently deliver tutorial classes, seminars, and workshops within the framework, learning outcomes, and delivery plan set by the Module Leader.
  • Prepare for tutorial sessions in advance, engaging with lecture content, readings, and cases so that tutorials reinforce and extend the module’s learning outcomes.
  • Facilitate active-learning activities including problem-solving exercises, case discussions, group work, role plays, and peer feedback.
  • Adapt tutorial pace and approach in response to student needs, prior knowledge, and engagement, within the boundaries set by the Module Leader.
  • Provide academic guidance to students during tutorials, office hours, and consultation sessions on tutorial content, coursework preparation, and study strategies.
  • Where multiple parallel tutorial groups operate, coordinate with other Tutors to ensure consistency of delivery and student experience.

Note: Lecture delivery, module design, and setting of assessment briefs remain the responsibility of the Module Leader. Tutors do not independently deliver lectures.

Assessment, Marking, and Feedback

  • First-mark student assessments (formative and summative) against rubrics and marking criteria set by the Module Leader; all summative marks are subject to moderation.
  • Provide constructive, timely, and developmental feedback to students in line with institutional feedback standards.
  • Participate in marking calibration exercises and moderation meetings led by the Module Leader.
  • Contribute to invigilation of examinations and in-class assessments as required.
  • Uphold academic integrity: identify, document, and refer suspected misconduct in line with University procedures.
  • Support the preparation of assessment materials (question banks, model answers, marking schemes) under the direction of the Module Leader.

Tutorial Material and Learning Resource Development

  • Prepare tutorial plans, exercises, worked examples, and supporting materials aligned to the Module Leader’s overall design.
  • Propose and, with the Module Leader’s approval, trial small-scale enhancements to tutorial activities (e.g., new digital tools, interactive techniques, peer-learning formats).
  • Maintain relevant sections of the Learning Management System (LMS) as delegated by the Module Leader.
  • Contribute to the review and refresh of tutorial materials at the end of each teaching cycle.

Student Support and Pastoral Contact

  • Hold regular office hours or consultation slots for students on assigned tutorial groups.
  • Provide subject-related academic guidance and signpost students to appropriate University support services (wellbeing, careers, academic skills).
  • Monitor student engagement and progress across tutorial groups; escalate concerns to the Module Leader in a timely manner.

Collegial and Professional Contributions

  • Participate actively in module team meetings, briefings, and end-of-cycle reviews.
  • Contribute to internal training, peer-observation, and professional development activities.
  • Where relevant, support Teaching Assistants working on the same module by sharing tutorial practice and coordinating operational tasks.
  • Represent the module positively at open days, applicant events, and student recruitment activities as requested.
  • Comply with all BUV policies including safeguarding, equality and inclusion, data protection, and academic integrity.
  • Engage in continuing professional development (e.g., FHEA, PGCHE, discipline-specific training) as appropriate.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the role and level, as requested by the Module Leader, Programme Lead, or Head of School.

Scope and Boundaries of the Role

The following boundaries define the scope of the Tutor role and distinguish it from Module Leader and other academic teaching positions:

  • Tutors do not deliver lectures as the lead teacher; lecture delivery remains the responsibility of the Module Leader.
  • Tutors do not design modules, set learning outcomes, or issue assessment briefs; they operate within a framework set by the Module Leader.
  • Tutors’ summative marks are always subject to moderation and final approval by the Module Leader.
  • Tutors do not act as Module Leader for a module, whether in the Module Leader’s absence or otherwise, unless expressly delegated in writing by the Programme Lead or Head of School.
  • Tutors do not primary-supervise dissertations or capstone projects; they may act as second supervisor or provide tutorial-level guidance where appropriate.
  • Tutors do not represent the module externally to external examiners, accreditation bodies, or industry partners without prior approval.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Degree and Teaching Requirements

  • Candidates with a relevant bachelor’s degree and/or master’s degree are preferred. For practice-led creative production modules, equivalent professional achievement may be considered where supported by a strong portfolio, showreel, and evidence of teaching or mentoring capability.

  • Capacity to first-mark assessments against rubrics, give constructive developmental feedback, participate in moderation and calibration, and uphold academic integrity requirements.
