


BRITISH UNIVERSITY VIETNAM (BUV)
British University Vietnam (BUV) is the first and only international university in Vietnam to directly award British degrees from the prestigious University of London and other UK universities. BUV is rated a 5 Star university of excellence by the world recognised QS accreditor and is also recognised with a University-wide accreditation from the UK’s Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

POSITION PURPOSE
The Dean (Higher Education) will be accountable for providing overall strategic and academic leadership at undergraduate and postgraduate levels of the University.
The Dean will provide leadership to support the positioning of British University Vietnam as a university of excellence in Vietnam and the Asian region. The Dean will be a senior academic with a strong reputation and standing who will exercise carriage of the overall academic work of the University with specific reference to how research and scholarship, teaching and learning, academic planning and operations, all align with the University’s strategic aims and objectives. The Dean is expected to be research active and be able to nurture a research culture among developing research and teaching staff as well as ensure a culture of scholarship among those staff whose work is primarily focused on teaching.
Accountabilities
Planning and Leadership: Provide academic and professional leadership by contributing to strategic direction setting, policy and planning processes of the University through participating in relevant forums, committees, and associated projects.
Management: Strategic management of the Higher Education (HE) Department of the University, including:
- Drive for Growth.
- Academic Leadership.
- Oversee improvements in the quality and delivery of teaching and the relevance of all programs to BUV’s mission and reputation
- Ensure faculty can develop a sound research profile, with research outcomes; encourage the generation of research income; and the supervision and completion of research degree students
- External Liaison.
- School Governance.
Governance: Refine and maintain academic governance structures and processes in ways that conform to the principles of transparency and fairness.
Teaching and Student Experience: Manage the development of programs and enhanced programme delivery (through Heads of Schools) and innovations in teaching (through the Head of the Centre for Academic Development). Contribute to improving the quality of teaching and learning (through the Head of the Quality Office) and the overall student experience (in collaboration with the Head of Student Engagement).
Research: Support the development of academic staff through management and mentoring of the Head, Centre for Research and Innovation – helping BUV create an active and productive research program, building inclusive research teams at BUV, and reinforcing high academic standards.
Graduate programmes: Support the development of the BUV postgraduate and research degree offer through the management and mentoring of the Head of the Graduate School.
External Liaison: Maintain close interaction with professional bodies, schools and partner institutions locally and internationally, seeking recognition, partnerships, and accreditation of the University as appropriate.
Industry Engagement: Support close links with key industry partners both locally and internationally with a view to securing work integrated learning opportunities for students, funding for research, professional experience opportunities for staff and professional recognition of programs offered.
Key Selection Criteria
Professional Standing: Ideally, be currently employed as Professor or Associate Professor (level E or D) at a recognised university or higher education institution.
Academic Qualifications: Must have a PhD or equivalent Doctoral qualifications in a relevant discipline.
Leadership: Must demonstrate successful experience in leading an academic or business unit through significant adaptation to changing internal and external circumstances. Ability to show achievements in setting organisational goals, meeting expectations, and maximizing student and staff performance in a culturally diverse environment. The successful candidate must have experience of leading a team of academic staff and professional support staff.
Research Profile: A record of significant breadth and depth in research in a field relevant to the University’s strategic operations and supported by clear evidence of recognised research outcomes including research degree completions, publications, and grants.
Teaching and Learning Achievements: Effectiveness in building a culture of scholarly excellence by providing a high quality and student focused learning and teaching environment that reflects leading practice in international or global education.
Management: Effective approaches to planning, negotiating, and implementing initiatives aligned to university strategy, external policy, and regulation and institutional resources.
Communication: Sophisticated communication skills, effectiveness in building and sustaining relationships, and success in earning the trust and respect of peers, staff, students, and external partners.
Work Permit
All foreign employees must adhere to the requirements for obtaining a valid visa and work permit in Vietnam. These requirements are mandated by the Government and may be over and above the mandatory requirements and key selection criteria. Work permit requirements are subject to change.
