BUV faculty members awarded with the FHEA and SFHEA certifications, showing dedication to quality teaching and scholarship 15:07:21

British University Vietnam (BUV) recently celebrated the achievement of several faculty members who were awarded prestigious certificates by Advance HE. These titles, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), not only affirms their teaching excellence but also acknowledges the significant contributions our faculty make to the development of student learning at BUV.

The FHEA and SFHEA titles are significant credentials in the academic world, awarded by Advance HE, a UK-based organization dedicated to enhancing teaching quality in higher education. The FHEA recognizes educators who demonstrate a thorough understanding of effective teaching, learning, and assessment practices, while the SFHEA is awarded to those who have a sustained record of effectiveness in their higher education roles, often involving leadership and mentoring responsibilities.

The 5 distinguished faculty members who received these accolades are:

Dr. Maren Viol, SFHEA

Dr. Maren Viol is a senior lecturer and the Discipline Lead of the School of Tourism & Hospitality. She earned her PhD from Edinburgh Napier University, Scotland with a thesis on history tourism in Berlin. Dr. Viol has extensive teaching and research experience in tourism, hospitality, and events management in both the UK and Vietnam, and has held leadership roles in various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Dr. Hamza Mutaher, FHEA

Dr. Hamza Mutaher is a lecturer in the School of Computing & Innovative Technologies and the Programme Lead of Computer Science: Cloud Technology & Cyber Security. He is an experienced lecturer and researcher, with a specialisation in Network Security, Cryptography, and Software Defined Networking.

Alex Gaja Ortega, FHEA

Alex Gaja Ortega has been a dedicated associate lecturer at the School of Communications & Creative Industries for the last 3 years. Aside from his dedication to the students at BUV, he is also a renowned professional architect, who earned a Cityscape Award in 2019 for his work as the Project Manager of the Nam Mui Dinh Resort design. Alex is now working on his Doctorate degree in green architecture seen in ethnic minorities in Vietnam.

Sandra Schneiderman, FHEA

With a Master’s degree in Education and a passion for teaching, Sandra Schneiderman has dedicated 4 years at BUV as the Student Success Lead. Sandra is highly appreciated amongst students as the person who helps them develop individualised success lessons and learning plans using the latest teaching methodologies. She also volunteers her time supporting university students in Vietnam’s Blue Dragon Mentoring Programmes, continuing to help generations of Vietnamese students achieve their learning goals.

Michael Lomax, FHEA

Michael Lomax is a dedicated teaching fellow and Head of Pre-University at BUV. With a Master’s degree in Mass Communications Management and a dedication to the BUV’s mission, he has helped generations of students to prepare for the international university environment.

These awards underscore BUV’s commitment to maintaining high teaching standards and continuous professional development among its staff. BUV prides itself on having a robust team of educators, many of whom already hold FHEA and SFHEA titles, reflecting the university’s dedication to providing a high-quality educational experience.
