Selection process and timeline

Step 1 - Application period opens

We begin with a road show programme at high schools in Hanoi, to introduce the Lion’s Heart Scholarship.

Applicants can register for the scholarship through various channels:

Step 2 - Guidance on applications

Candidates need to submit their full application with academic transcript of Year 12 and other supporting documents to complete the scholarship application package.

Supporting documents required for your full application by include:

  • Scholarship application form
  • Personal Statement
  • Notarised copy of National ID card
  • Notarised copy of high school graduation diploma or relevant
  • Notarised copy of the original high school transcript
  • IELTS / TOEFL certificate (if available) in need of financial support (if relevant)
  • 2 passport-sized photos (must be 2 copies of the same photo taken within the last 6 months)
  • Notarised copy of certificate or award or prize (if available)
  • Authorised evidence of disability or in need of financial support (required)
  • Letter of recommendation from school counselor


All documents that are not in English shall be translated to English and certified.

Step 3 - Shortlisting

Step 4 - Informing shortlisted candidates

Step 5 - Scholarship finalists announced

A Scholarship Panel is established annually to approve a short-list of candidates.

Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted via email and post.

The finalists will be informed of detailed schedules and guidelines for next steps.

Step 6 - English proficiency test

Applicants who are not available for this test or cannot be contacted will have their applications withdrawn unless they have submitted a valid IELTS certificate equivalent to at least IELTS Foundation.  

Step 7 - Final Interview

Applicants will need to travel to BUV Ecopark Campus for the final Interview. All agreed travel costs (flight/ train and bus ticket – economy class only) will be covered by the University.

Step 8 - Winner Announcement

Step 9 - Award Ceremony

All short-listed candidates will be informed of the final decision.

To receive the scholarship students will have to agree to the written offer and to the terms of scholarship.

About Lion’s Heart Scholarship

1. Introduction

The Lion’s Heart Scholarship programme is a full scholarship valued at 1 billion VND and covers the tuition fees for Pathway programmes and an undergraduate course at the British University Vietnam in addition to the travelling cost for attending the scholarship interview round for students who are not in Hanoi and Hung Yen (if needed). BUV Bachelor programmes are taught in Vietnam but awarded by UK reputed public universities.

A key feature of the programme is to contribute to Vietnam’s development through providing the world class higher education opportunities offered at the first British owned university in Vietnam. The awardees are selected based on their disadvantaged background (including their need of financial support, physical or mentally disability along with a combination of previous academic performance, relevant experience of community work and the potential to become leaders in the public sector, business and academia. There is only 01 Lion’s Heart Scholarship.

2. Fields of study

The scholarship programme applies to the following courses, which are entirely taught at BUV:

  • BSc (Hons) International Business Management
  • BSc (Hons) Computer Science: Cyber Security/Cloud, Networks and Security
  • BA (Hons) Marketing Management
  • BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance
  • BA (Hons) Tourism Management
  • BA (Hons) Events Management
  • BA (Hons) Contemporary Creative Practice: Graphic Design/ Illustration/ Photography
  • BA (Hons) Computer Games Design and Programming
  • BA (Hons) International Hospitality Management
  • BA (Hons) Finance and Economics

3. Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the scholarship, all applicants must:

(a) Be a citizen of Vietnam and reside in Vietnam at the time of application,

(b) At the time of application be not more than 30 years of age,

(c) Before being awarded the scholarship, have completed secondary school at the time of application with a minimum of GPA in Year 12th of minimum7.5,

(d) Submit a personal statement, (please refer to the 6 questions in the scholarship application form) by the stated closing date,

(e) Submit authorised evidence of disability or in need of financial support (required)

(f) Meet the English language entry requirements of the applied programme of study,

(g) Not hold any other scholarships.

4. English requirements

There are no requirements for evidence of English ability at the time of application, however the language in use in the application and both interview rounds will be English. Hence it is recommended that applicants should have a minimum English achievement level equivalent to an IELTS Foundation.

5. Selection criteria

A Scholarship Panel will select candidates based on an assessment of the following factors:

  • Academic results
  • Volunteer/Community work experience
  • Relevance of proposed study
  • Need for financial support
  • Potential contribution to the University
  • Leadership potential
  • Growing up from disadvantaged background

6. General terms and conditions

  1. The scholarship covers the full tuition fee of an BUV Undergraduate programmes at the British University Vietnam (BUV), including the cost of learning English from the basic level and Foundation course (if necessary) and living expenses (depending on the circumstances).
  2. The scholarships are valid for Undergraduate programmes awarded by Staffordshire University or British University Vietnam (BUV).
  3. Students are unable to transfer their majors during the scholarship. If the student who receives the scholarship cancels and ceases their study, the scholarship will automatically be revoked.
  4. To ensure scholarship retention throughout the programme, students are required not to get fail in any subject. In the event of a failure, students will need to attend an evaluation meeting with the Scholarship Fund Management Board to come to specific conclusions. The decision of the Scholarship Fund Management Board is final.
  5. Scholars are responsible for notifying BUV when there are any changes that directly or indirectly affect the scholarship, such as temporary absence or change of bank accounts, ... A student is only eligible to receive one slot of scholarship and one accommodation scholarship at the same time.
  6. BUV is not responsible for any loss caused by errors in the recipient's information provision.
  7. For the scholarship covering living expenses, the scholar must provide a bank account to receive the living allowance or other payments from the university. If the student needs change his/ her bank account information, he/she needs to provide new information to Student Support Officer (SSO) at least 3 weeks prior to the scholarship period.
  8. Living expenses are deposited into your bank account the first week of the first semester. Students granting scholarship including living expenses must notify BUV if they have received the living expenses before the 3rd week of that month. The school may late payment or stop paying the following semester's living expenses if it does not receive confirmation of the student receiving the scholarship on time.
  9. In the event that the living expenses have not been received after the above time, the student receiving the scholarship is responsible for informing BUV as soon as possible. BUV will not resolve complaints related to scholarships if the notice arrives 1 month after the first week of the semester.
  10. Depending on each semester, scholars may be asked to complete an online survey or provide feedback on the scholarship and learning experience.
  11. If you are a scholarship student, you agree to:

11.1. To BUV and BUV staff:

  • Filming, taking photos and using your photos in relation to the scholarship programme;
  • Using all the materials you write, share ... about the experience at BUV related to the scholarship programme;

11.2. All rights, titles, and interests from or others relating to materials you have written in your profile or photos taken or on behalf of the school are under copyright of the university. This right includes the transfer of the image to sponsors but will only be used with your permission.

11.3. BUV reserves the right to your claims or representations on your behalf, the right to use any scholarship materials written by you and movies or photographs relating to you.

11.4. If requested, you will attend the annual scholarship ceremony, and participate in other activities to promote BUV and scholarships, including public speaking, info day, sponsorship funding, interview and photographic press. Photos and videos at these events may be used and delivered to sponsors.

BUV reserves the right to make the final decision on all matters related to the scholarship programme, including discontinuing or withdrawing scholarships for students:

  • found to provide false information in scholarship application documents;
  • suspension from school for any reason;
  • get fail on any subject;
  • does not guarantee the number of class-hours required each subject;
  • failure to comply with the terms and conditions set in this document and/or the scholarship acceptance letter;
  • was found to violate BUV rules.
  1. The scholarships cannot be converted to cash or transferable under any circumstances.
  2. BUV reserves the right at its sole discretion to make a final decision on any interests or other matter not detailed in the scholarship acceptance letter or in this document.
